iago
Iago is Othello's ensign (assistant officer) and the play's villain. He deceives nearly everyone and orchestrates the tragedy out of jealousy and resentment.
desdamona
Desdemona is Othello's loyal and loving wife. She is falsely accused of infidelity and becomes a victim of Iago's schemes.
cassio
Michael Cassio is Othello's lieutenant. His promotion over Iago sparks Iago's jealousy and drives much of the plot.
emilia
Emilia is Iago's wife and Desdemona's attendant. She ultimately exposes Iago's lies, even at great personal cost.
gratiano
Gratiano is Brabantio's brother and Desdemona's uncle. He appears near the end of the play and helps deal with the consequences of the events.
lodavicio
Lodovico is a Venetian nobleman and relative of Desdemona. He arrives with orders from Venice and witnesses the tragedy's aftermath.
montano
Montano is the former governor of Cyprus. He is respected and becomes involved when Cassio is drawn into a drunken fight.
othello
Othello is the Moorish general of Venice. He is respected for his military skill but is manipulated by Iago into believing his wife is unfaithful.
the duke
Duke of Venice is the ruler who values Othello's military service and supports his marriage to Desdemona despite Brabantio's objections.
