Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder (ANSD)
A condition with normal outer hair cell function but abnormal afferent auditory pathways, affecting hearing.
Etiologies
Causes of ANSD, which can be genetic, acquired, or a combination of both.
Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE's)
Tests that measure sound waves produced in the inner ear which are normal in ANSD patients despite hearing loss.
Acquired Etiologies of ANSD
Causes that develop over time, including hypoxia and hyperbilirubinemia.
Hypoxia
A deficiency in the amount of oxygen reaching the tissues, which can lead to ANSD.
Hyperbilirubinemia
An excess of bilirubin in the blood, can cause neurotoxicity and is related to ANSD.
Management of ANSD
Approaching treatment comprehensively and may include amplification devices and communication training.
Cochlear Implant
A surgical option for ANSD patients if amplification devices like hearing aids are ineffective.
Speech Perception
The ability to understand and process spoken language, which may be difficult for those with ANSD.
Fluctuating Hearing Loss
A characteristic of ANSD where hearing ability can change over time.
Audiometric Results
Findings from audiometric testing that may show a range from normal to profound sensorineural hearing loss in ANSD.
Inner Hair Cells (IHCs)
Cells in the cochlea that play a crucial role in hearing and may be affected in ANSD.
Amplification Devices
Hearing aids and systems intended to improve hearing for individuals with hearing impairment.
Manual Communication Training
Training in communication methods such as sign language or cued speech for those with ANSD.
