Observation
Information gathered directly through the senses, including sight, smell, hearing, and touch (taste is omitted in lab settings).
Inference
An logical interpretation or explanation of observations.
Qualitative Observation
An observation that describes physical traits or qualities without numerical data, such as 'The plumeria centers are yellow.'
Quantitative Observation
An observation that involves precise counts or numerical measurements, such as 'There are six leaves.'
Microscope Total Power
The overall magnification calculated by multiplying the objective lens power by the eyepiece power, such as 2××10×=20×.
Scientific Method
A systematic approach to scientific inquiry involving observation, questioning, hypothesizing, experimenting, analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and communicating results.
Hypothesis
A testable explanation or prediction developed to answer a scientific question.
Independent Variable
The specific variable that is deliberately changed or manipulated by the experimenter during an experiment.
Dependent Variable
The variable that responds to changes made in an experiment, representing the recorded data.
Control Variable
All the factors and conditions that are kept strictly constant throughout an experiment.
Stirring Rod
A laboratory tool used to stir liquid mixtures.
Fire Extinguisher Location
A key lab safety feature noted as being located at the front of the room outside the door.
Accident Protocol
A fundamental lab safety rule requiring that all accidents be reported immediately.
