Conflict Theory

A theory that argues crime and criminal law are shaped by power, inequality and social conflict

Capitalism

An economic system where the means of production are privately owned for profit

Bourgeoisie

The ruling class who own the means of production and hold economic power

Proletariat

The working class who sell their labour in exchange for wages

Class Conflict

Conflict between social classes over wealth, power and resources.

Means of Production

The resources used to produce goods and services, such as factories, land and machinery

Alienation

A feeling of disconnection workers experience from their work, products or society

Surplus Value

The value workers create beyond what they are paid, which becomes profit for employers
