-got support from many German princes and local supporters; they protected luther from being condemned from the Church

-during this time there was frustration with the Catholic Church due to the abusiveness and corruption(indulgences)

-A group of Christians that protested aganist certain practices and doctrines in the Catholic Church during the Reformation.

-Martin Luther and John Calvin and early reformers intentions wasnt to create a whole new branch/ denomination; they wanted to reform within the Catholic Church.

-Over time different reformers started like John Calvin started their own protestants and movements that led to protestantism being a distinct branch; many reformers started to disagree with eachother

-shapes our understanding because protestantism is a movement to challenge authority and advocate for a return to scripture and reformers did not see themselves as creating a new denomination
