What is a parallel circuit?
A circuit that contains branches so current can flow in multiple paths
How does current behave at a junction in a parallel circuit?
The current splits between the branches
How does current behave when branches rejoin in a parallel circuit?
The current recombines before returning to the cell
What is the rule for total current in a parallel circuit?
The total current leaving the cell equals the sum of the currents in each branch
What is the definition of conventional current?
Current flowing from the positive end of the cell to the negative end (historical but still used)
Which way do electrons actually flow?
From the negative end of the cell to the positive end
How do we measure electric current?
Using an ammeter
What is the symbol for an ammeter?
A circle with a capital A inside
Where is an ammeter placed in a parallel circuit?
In series with the branch or part of the circuit where you want to measure current
If 0.3 A leaves the cell, what could the currents be in the branches?
Any combination where the currents in the branches add to 0.3 A (e.g. 0.1 A + 0.2 A)
If the upper branch current is 0.3 A and the total current is 0.5 A, what is the lower branch current?
0.2 A
If the upper branch current is 0.4 A and the lower branch is 0.3 A, what is the total current leaving the cell?
0.7 A
Why is the current in a parallel circuit not the same in all branches?
Because each branch may contain different components with different resistance
What happens to current if more branches are added in parallel?
Total current increases because more paths are available for current to flow
What is the benefit of parallel circuits in devices like homes?
Components can work independently; if one fails, others still work
What happens to the total current if one branch is removed in a parallel circuit?
Total current decreases
In a parallel circuit, does current get used up in the branches?
No, current is not used up; it just splits and rejoins
What determines how much current flows in each branch?
The resistance of the components in the branch
Is current conserved in a parallel circuit?
Yes, the total current entering a junction equals the total current leaving it
What does a parallel circuit look like in a diagram?
A circuit where wires split to form separate branches and rejoin later
