History
The study of the past, derived from the Greek word historia, which means knowledge acquired through inquiry and investigation.
Historia
A Greek word meaning knowledge acquired through inquiry and investigation; an account of the past of a person or group of people through written documents and historical evidence.
Quasi-History
Stories such as theology, myths, and legends that tell of a society's past but are concerned with non-human entities and are not records of facts.
Herodotus
Known as the Father of History who established history as a science and authored 'Histories' to describe and explain the deeds of men.
Histories
A notable work by Herodotus written to describe the deeds of men for future posterity and explain the reasons behind those deeds.
Thucydides
Known as the Father of Scientific History who emphasized systematic collection of evidence from eyewitnesses and authored 'History of the Peloponnesian War.'
Oral History
A historical method associated with Thucydides that relies on testimonies of eyewitnesses as reliable sources of history.
Positivism
A 19th-century philosophy asserting that real knowledge lies in the actual observation of facts and sensorial evidence, summarized by the mantra 'No document, No History.'
Historian
A person who continuously pursues historical knowledge, asks relevant questions, interprets historical evidence, and converts historical sources into historical knowledge.
Place (Element of History)
The location where the history was written.
Period (Element of History)
The context of the time when the history was written.
Sources (Element of History)
Objects left in the past that exist either as relics or as testimonies of witnesses to the past.
Documents
Written or printed materials produced in one form or another sometime in the past.
Numerical Records
Any type of numerical data in printed or handwritten form.
Oral Statements
Any form of statement made orally by someone.
Relics
Objects whose physical or visual characteristics can provide information about the past.
Primary Sources
Sources produced simultaneously with the event, period, or subject being studied, prepared by an individual who was a participant or direct witness.
Secondary Sources
Sources produced by an author who relied on primary sources and was not a direct witness to the event being described.
