Belgae
Aquitanians
Celts (called Gauls by the Romans)
These groups differ in language, customs, and laws, showing Gaul is not unified.
Garumna (Garonne) River:
separates Gauls/Celts from Aquitanians
Matrona (Marne) & Seine Rivers:
separate Belgae from Gauls
Rhone River:
starting point of Gaul
Rhine River:
eastern boundary; near Germanic tribes
Pyrenees Mountains:
southern boundary of Aquitaine
Ocean (Atlantic):
western and northern borders
Belgae
Location: Northern Gaul, near the Rhine River
Direction faced: North and east
Power & Importance:
Considered the strongest and bravest
Least influenced by Roman culture
Constantly at war with Germanic tribes
Relationship to Others:
Close enemies of the Germans
More warlike due to isolation and conflict
Celts / Gauls
Location:
Between the Rhone, Garumna, Ocean, Belgae, and Rhine
Importance:
Central region of Gaul
Culturally distinct but more exposed to Roman influence than the Belgae
Relationship:
Separated from Aquitanians and Belgae by rivers
Aquitanians
Location:
From the Garonne River to the Pyrenees Mountains
Near Spain and the Atlantic Ocean
Direction faced: West and north
Importance:
Most geographically isolated
Distinct from other Gauls in culture and language
Helvetii
Location: Near the Rhine River
Power & Importance:
Very brave and warlike
Frequently fight the Germans
Relationship:
Compared to other Gauls in valor
Strength comes from constant warfare

Proximity to enemies (Germans) increases strength and bravery
Isolation = Strength:
Less Roman influence leads to more toughness
Division:
Gaul is fragmented, making conquest easier
