Hardware
The overall term used to describe the components of a computer, such as the central processing unit (CPU), monitor, modem, and memory storage devices.
Desktop
The first image to pop up on the monitor screen after the computer is switched on, started up, and logged into.
Software
Programs that operate the computer system, individual hardware components, and user programs like word processing, email, and internet access.
Electronic medical record (EMR)
A digital version of the patient’s chart.
CMS
Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Barcode label and scanning
A system used to track supply use and charges during surgery, including patient ID, patient record, and billing system to prompt materials management resupply.
Radio-frequency identification (RFID)
Technology that uses radio-frequency waves to capture multiple tags containing microchips simultaneously to reduce human effort and error.
Digital scheduling boards
Electronic scheduling of surgical procedures that provides necessary patient and procedural information to all relevant departments in the healthcare facility (HCF).
Protected health information (PHI)
Patient information that is often protected by encrypted screens and encompasses referrals, billing records, and prescription records.
Electronic preference cards
Digital records that provide procedural specifications and the list of equipment, supplies, and surgical instrument trays for the procedure.
Instrument tracking
A computerized process used to improve quality processing and prevent the loss of instruments in the sterile processing department.
Safety Data Sheets
Electronically accessible catalogs of information on chemicals and solutions that meet compliance with federal and state regulatory standards.
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
The act that establishes definitions and rules for protected health information (PHI).
