Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)
The minimum level of energy required to sustain vital functions in a waking state.
Indirect Calorimetry
A measurement technique involving the analysis of inspired and expired air to determine energy expenditure.
Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)
The level of energy needed for resting functions, including daily activities and vital functions.
Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE)
The total energy expended in a day, composed of resting metabolic rate, thermogenesis, and energy expended during physical activity.
Thermogenesis
Energy expended through heat production, includes obligatory and facultative thermogenesis.
Body Surface Area (BSA)
A measure used to estimate resting daily energy expenditure, calculated using height and weight.
Lean Body Mass (LBM)
The weight of a person's body minus the fat content; significant for calculating RMR.
Fasting (Negative Energy Balance)
A state that decreases RMR by 10% to 25%, depending on the duration of the fast.
Cold-Induced Thermogenesis
Increased RMR resulting from cold weather adaptation and exposure.
Catecholamines
Hormones like epinephrine and norepinephrine that can increase RMR by mobilizing the sympathetic nervous system.
