Population
The entire group of individuals or instances about whom we hope to learn.
Target Sample
The specific group of individuals the researcher is interested in studying.
Accessible Sample
The portion of the target population that can be reached or measured by the researcher.
Nonprobability Sampling
Sampling methods where not every individual has a known chance of being selected.
Probability Sampling
Sampling methods where every individual has a known chance of being selected.
Convenience Sampling
A nonprobability sampling technique that involves selecting subjects who are easy to reach.
Quota Sampling
A nonprobability sampling method where the researcher ensures equal representation of various subgroups.
Consecutive Sampling
A nonprobability sampling method where subjects are selected in a sequence over a period of time.
Purposive Sampling
A nonprobability sampling method where subjects are selected based on specific characteristics.
Simple Probability Sampling
A probability sampling method where every member of the population has an equal chance of being selected.
Stratified Probability Sampling
A probability sampling technique that divides the population into strata and samples from each strata.
Systematic Sampling
A probability sampling method where every nth individual is selected from a list.
Sample Size
The number of subjects included in a study.
Attrition
The loss of participants from a study over time.
Setting
The environment or location where a study takes place.
Laboratory Setting
Controlled environment where experiments are conducted.
Real Setting
Natural environment outside of a laboratory where real-world findings are applied.
Critiquing a Quantitative Sample & Setting
Evaluating the sampling strategy, sample representation, number of subjects, and appropriateness of the setting in a study.
