What was the Revolt of the Northern Earls (1569)?
A rebellion against Elizabeth I led by the Earls of Northumberland and Westmorland and Aimed to remove Elizabeth and restore Catholicism .
Why did the northern earls revolt not work ?
They expected Spanish support but didn’t receive any .
What was the aim of the northern earls revolt ?
To overthrow Elizabeth and replace her with Mary queen of Scots .
What did the pope do ?
The pope issued a papal bull which excommunicated Elizabeth and meant catholics didn’t have to obey her .
What did the papal bull order lead to for catholics ?
It meant they got harsher treatment and punishments.
What are puritans ?
Radical Protestants .
What do puritans want to do ?
Get rid of anything from church that’s not in the bible .
What did puritans want gone from church ?
Vestments and the hierarchy as they opposed bishops as it was to catholic .
What did catholics want ?
They wanted a return of the popes authority .
What was the Privy Council?
A group of around 19 advisers who helped Elizabeth run the country and make important decisions.
What was Parliament?
An assembly that helped pass laws and approve taxes requested by the Queen.
What was the Religious Settlement of 1559?
Elizabeth’s solution to England’s religious divisions, creating a moderate Protestant Church.
What was a problem of money did Elizabeth have ?
The crown had a debt of 300 000 pounds .
What was Elizabeth’s succession problem?
She had no heir creating uncertainty about the succession.
