Ptosis
Drooping of the upper eyelid because of paralysis.
Chalazion
A nodule or cyst on the eyelid caused by an obstruction of a sebaceous gland.
Hordeolum
The medical term for a stye; a pus-filled, painful lesion on the eyelid caused by an infection of a sebaceous gland.
Blepharitis
Swelling of the eyelid near an eyelash hair follicle.
Ectropion
Eversion of the edge of an eyelid.
Entropion
Inversion of the edge of an eyelid.
Conjunctivitis
The medical term for pinkeye; an inflammation of the conjunctiva caused by an infection or allergy.
Dacryoadenitis
Inflammation of the lacrimal gland typically caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi.
Subconjunctival hemorrhage
Bleeding between the conjunctiva and the sclera caused by an injury.
Xerophthalmia
Drying of the eye because of insufficient tear production.
Diabetic retinopathy
A complication of diabetes where there is damage to the retina.
Corneal abrasion
An injury to the outer layer of the cornea.
Corneal ulcer
Pitting of the cornea caused by an infection or injury that can leave a cloudy scar.
Uveitis
Inflammation of the uvea leading to swelling.
Iritis
Inflammation of the uvea that affects primarily the structures in front of the eye.
Keratitis
Inflammation of the cornea caused by some type of infection.
Keratoconus
Distortion of the cornea leading to blurred or distorted vision.
Retinal detachment
When some or all of the retina detaches from the choroid leading to blindness if not repaired.
Nystagmus
Involuntary rhythmic movement of the eyeball.
Papilledema
Swelling and inflammation of the optic nerve at the optic disc area.
Anisocoria
When the pupils are unequal in size.
Cataract
The loss of transparency of the lens causing progressive loss of visual clarity.
Vitreous floaters
Cellular debris that float in the vitreous humor and can cast a shadow on the retina.
Photopsia
The appearance of flashes of light caused by damage to the eye or seen in migraine headaches.
