Immunity
The ability to resist foreign proteins, viruses, and bacteria.
Innate Defenses
Physical barriers and internal defenses like cells and chemicals that provide immediate response to pathogens.
Adaptive Immunity
The part of the immune system that develops memory against specific pathogens after initial exposure.
Macrophage
A type of white blood cell that engulfs and digests cellular debris and pathogens.
Phagocytosis
The process by which a cell engulfs particles, such as bacteria or dead cells.
Neutrophils
The most common type of white blood cell that responds first to infection and engulfs pathogens.
Chemical Mediators
Substances like histamines and interferons that promote the inflammatory response in the body.
Mucous Membranes
Body cavities open to the exterior that act as a barrier and can become compromised leading to infections.
Interferon
A protein produced by cells in response to viral infection, helping to protect uninfected tissues.
Fever
An increase in body temperature as a response to infection, acting as a defense mechanism against pathogens.
Diapedesis
The process by which white blood cells move through the walls of blood vessels to reach tissues.
Sepsis
A life-threatening condition that arises when the body responds poorly to infection.
Histamine
A chemical released during inflammatory responses that increases blood flow and vascular permeability.
Incontinence
The inability to control urination or defecation, which can lead to increased risk of infections.
Keratin
A protective protein found in skin, hair, and nails, contributing to physical barriers against pathogens.
