Mughal Empire
Islamic government; Sunni Turkish group; Leaders get worse; Akbar - tolerance; efficient administration; no forced conversions; tried to help women. Poor leaders afterwards - Jahangir is opium & alcohol addict, Aurangzeb reversed policies.
Ottoman Empire
Islamic government; Sunni Turkish Group; took Byzantine: Constantinople-Istanbul; Leaders Get Worse; Suleyman the Magnificent conquered areas. Leaders kill son; force others in isolation producing poor leaders.
Safavid Empire
Islamic government; Shi’a Turkish Group; Sunni vs. Shi’a; Isfahan city; Shah Ishmail - forced Shi’a; fought with Ottoman.
Ming Dynasty
Confucian government; Civil Service exam; took over from Mongols -stop everything Mongol-like; Beijing still capital. Yongle - Zheng He expeditions and tribute.
Jizya
A tax on non-Muslims. Akbar eliminated it in the Mughal Empire to promote tolerance, but Aurangzeb reinstated it.
Divine Faith
A syncretic religion promoted by Akbar in the Mughal Empire, blending elements of Islam, Hinduism, and other faiths to unite the empire.
Sati
The practice of widow immolation, discouraged by Akbar in the Mughal Empire.
Janissaries
Elite infantry force in the Ottoman army, recruited through the devshirme system and known for their military prowess with guns.
Devshirme
Ottoman policy of taking boys from conquered Christian territories to be raised as Muslim soldiers and administrators.
Cotton
A trade good produced in the Mughal Empire.
Silk, carpets
A trade good produced in the Safavid Empire.
Ming ware
Chinese porcelain highly valued during the Ming Dynasty.
Sikh religion
A religion that emerged in India, blending elements of Hinduism and Islam.
Qing Dynasty
The dynasty that replaced the Ming Dynasty in China, originating from Manchuria.
Taiping Rebellion
A major rebellion against the Qing Dynasty in China.
