God
The supreme being, creator, and ruler of the universe (in both faiths).
Omnipotent
Almighty; having unlimited power (a quality of God).
Justice
The idea that God is fair, giving people what they deserve, rewarding good and punishing bad.
Allah
The Arabic name for God (in Islam).
Tawhid
The belief in the Oneness and unity of God (Islamic monotheism).
Prophet
A person chosen by God to communicate His message to people.
Revelation
The process by which God makes His will known to humans (e.g. Qur’an, Bible).
Sin
An action, thought, or behaviour against God’s laws, separating humans from God.
Salvation
Deliverance from sin and its consequences; being restored into right relationship with God.
Resurrection
The rising from the dead; both Christianity (Jesus) and Islam (end times) use this concept.
Heaven
A state or place of eternal happiness in the presence of God (Paradise).
Hell
A state or place of eternal suffering or separation from God.
Five Pillars (Islam)
The five key duties Muslims must perform: Shahadah, Salah, Zakah, Sawm, Hajj.
Shahadah
The Muslim declaration of faith: “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His messenger.”
Salah
Ritual prayer performed five times a day in Islam.
Zakah
Obligatory giving of alms — charity — for Muslims (usually 2.5% of savings).
Sawm
Fasting during the month of Ramadan (dawn to dusk abstinence).
Hajj
The pilgrimage to Mecca (if able) that every Muslim should try to perform once.
Incarnation (Christianity)
The belief that God became flesh in the person of Jesus Christ.
Crucifixion (Christianity)
The method and event of Jesus’ death on the cross.
Atonement (Christianity)
The restoring of the relationship between God and humans through Jesus’ life, death, resurrection.
Trinity (Christianity)
The belief that God is three persons (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) yet one being.
Holy Spirit (Christianity)
The third person of the Trinity; the presence of God active in the world.
