what is collision theory?
particles must collide with greater energy than the activation energy
what is the Boltzmann Distribution?
distribution showing the amount of energy particles have and how much they need to react
how does a higher temp increase rate of collisions?
more particles have E > Ea so much successful collisions so higher rate
how does a higher concentration increase rate of collisions?
a higher concentration means there are more molecules so more successful collisions
how does a higher surface area increase rate of collisions?
it exposes more particles increasing frequency of successful collisions
how does a catalyst increase rate of collisions?
provides an alternate pathway with lower Ea so more particles have greater E than Ea
how does a catalyst increase rate?
the particles have a different pathway with lower activation energy and so more particles have enough energy to react and have successful collisions
what does the Boltzmann distribution show?
the fraction of molecules with a given kinetic energy
what are the factors affecting rate of reaction?
concentration, pressure, catalyst, temperature, surface area, intensity of radiation
