Intro
Up until 1860 women were seen as inferior, little contribution to running of the country as they couldn’t vote and have access to full education. By 1918 most women gained the vote.
Suffragists
K- Mud March in 1907 with over 3000 campaigners
K- by 1905 the press weren’t interested in the suffragists as they were too boring and too easily ignored
Ev- ww1 only took a few years of contribution whereas the suffragists took a decade or more even to get noticed
WW1
K- women joined VAD which helped men who were injured on the front and at home.
K- women in munitions factories, Gretna, supplied the war with munitions
Ev- Warwick- ‘since women have played such a vital part in the national effort, of course they must be allowed to share politics
Changes
K-1870 education act
K- more women became clerical workers but earned 65% of men
Ev- Rover- ‘war advertised the participation of women in everyday life of the nation’
Suffragettes
K- window smashing in 1909
K- cut telegraph, wreck plants, blow up postboxes, slashing pictured and pouring acid on golf courses
Ev- stopped to help the war effort and many joined the women’s armed forces
Influences from abroad
K- Many other countries were colonised by Britain and gave women the vote before them, new Zealand 1893, Australia 1903
K- Britain looked at other important countries who hadn’t given women the vote
