Jacksonian Democracy
A political movement that championed the rights and power of the common man, advocating for universal male suffrage and popular elections.
Universal Male Suffrage
The right of all adult males to vote, regardless of property ownership or wealth.
Corrupt Bargain
The alleged deal between John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay in the 1824 presidential election to manipulate the outcome.
Spoils System
The practice of a successful political party giving public office to its supporters.
Manifest Destiny
The 19th-century doctrine that the expansion of the US throughout the American continents was both justified and inevitable.
Nullification Crisis
A conflict between the federal government and South Carolina over the state's attempt to nullify federal tariffs.
Tariff of Abominations
The nickname given to the Tariff of 1828, which was criticized by southern states for raising duties excessively.
Indian Removal Act
A law enacted in 1830 that authorized the president to negotiate treaties to remove Native American tribes from their lands.
Trail of Tears
The forced removal of Cherokee and other tribes to territories west of the Mississippi River, leading to widespread suffering and deaths.
Election of 1828
A presidential election characterized by mudslinging and notably increased voter participation.
Second Party System
The political system that replaced the First Party System, featuring a competition primarily between the Democrats and the Whigs.
Maysville Road Veto
Andrew Jackson's veto of a federal funding project for a road, citing a lack of national interest.
Webster-Hayne Debates
A series of debates in 1830 focused on the issue of states' rights versus federal authority.
American System
A plan to strengthen and unify the nation, encompassing a tariff, internal improvements, and a national bank.
Cherokee Nation v. Georgia
An 1831 Supreme Court case that ruled that Native American tribes were not foreign states.
Worcester v. Georgia
A Supreme Court case that established that states could not impose laws on Native American lands.

The first third party in the U.S. that arose in opposition to the perceived threat posed by the Freemasons.
