Contractions

Shortened versions of pairs of words commonly used in conversational English, such as "I'm" for "I am."

Base form

The infinitive form of a verb without the word "to," used to make the present simple tense.

Present Simple

A verb tense used to describe daily routines, pastimes, and possessions.

Present Continuous

A verb form used to describe something that is happening right now, or for planned future arrangements.

Action verbs

Verbs that usually describe what people or things do, which can be used in both simple and continuous forms.

State verbs

Verbs that say how things are or how someone feels; they are usually only used in the simple form and not in the continuous form.

Adverbs of frequency

Words that help to show how regularly an action happens, often used with the present simple to describe routines.

Boiling

A term used in spoken English to mean "very hot."

Freezing

A term used in spoken English to mean "very cold."

Comparative adjective

An adjective used to describe the difference between two nouns by using the word "than."

Superlative adjective

An adjective used to talk about extremes, such as "the biggest" or "the smallest."

Ago

A word used to say how many years before the present moment something happened.

Past Simple

A tense used to describe events that happened at a definite time in the past or the state of things at a particular past point.

Irregular verbs

Verbs whose past simple forms are not formed using the normal rules and may look very different from their infinitive forms.

Sequence words

Words and phrases used to help someone understand where a person is in a story, such as "first," "then," and "finally."

Subject questions

Questions used to ask who did an action, where the question word acts as the subject of the main verb.

Object questions

Questions used to ask who received an action, where the question word is the object of the main verb.

Indefinite pronouns

Words such as "anyone," "someone," and "everyone" used to refer to a person or group without explaining specifically who they are.

Short questions

A way of showing interest and inviting a speaker to continue by inverting the word order of their statement.

Present Perfect

A verb form used to talk about something that happened in the past which has a result or consequence in the present.

Past participle

The form of a verb used with "have" or "has" to create the present perfect; regular versions are formed by adding "ed."

Yet

A word meaning "until now" used with the present perfect to show an intention to do something that hasn't happened yet.

Already

A word used with the present perfect to show that something has happened, possibly sooner than expected.

Eating out

Having a meal outside of the home, usually in a restaurant.
