Mucosa (Innermost Layer)

Structure: Composed of a lining epithelium, a supporting layer of loose connective tissue called the lamina propria (rich in blood and lymph vessels), and a thin smooth muscle layer called the muscularis mucosae.

  • Function: Secretes mucus, digestive enzymes, and hormones; absorbs nutrients; protects against infectious disease.

Submucosa

Structure: A dense layer of irregular connective tissue containing larger blood vessels, lymphatics, and glands. Crucially, it houses the Meissner's (submucosal) plexus, which regulates secretions and local blood flow.

Function: Provides elasticity and structural support to the GI tract.

Muscularis Externa (or Muscularis Propria)

Structure: Typically consists of two thick smooth muscle layers: an inner circular layer and an outer longitudinal layer (the stomach adds a third oblique layer). Sandwiched between them is the Auerbach's (myenteric) plexus, which controls GI motility.

Function: Responsible for mechanical breakdown and propulsion via peristalsis and segmentation.

Serosa or Adventitia (Outermost Layer)

Structure: Called serosa (visceral peritoneum) when inside the peritoneal cavity, consisting of a thin layer of connective tissue covered by simple squamous epithelium. Called adventitia (coarse fibrous connective tissue) in retroperitoneal or external zones like the esophagus.

Function: Anchors organs in place and reduces friction against neighboring structures.
