BLS
Basic Life Support; emergency actions used to support vital functions.
Check-Call-Care
An organized emergency-response approach emphasizing scene/casualty assessment, activation of assistance, and appropriate care.
Primary Survey
Rapid assessment for immediate life-threatening conditions.
Secondary Survey
More detailed head-to-toe and condition assessment after immediate priorities.
Chain of Survival
A sequence of critical emergency actions that work together to improve survival.
FBAO
Foreign Body Airway Obstruction; blockage of the airway by an object.
Triage
Rapid assessment and prioritization of patients according to urgency.
START
Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment; rapid assessment connected with breathing, perfusion/circulation, and mental status.
Perfusion
Adequacy of blood flow to body tissues.
Mental Status
A patient's ability to respond appropriately and follow commands.
Reassessment
Checking the patient again to identify changes in condition or priority.
Priority
Classification assigned according to the urgency of the patient's need for medical attention.
Firefighter's Carry
A rapid one-rescuer method for moving a casualty who cannot walk independently.
Cradle Carry
Carries a small/light casualty, particularly a child, in the rescuer's arms.
Pack-Strap Carry
One-rescuer carry in which the casualty is positioned against the rescuer.
Four-Handed Seat Carry
Two rescuers form a seat with their hands/arms for a cooperative conscious casualty.
Three-Man Lift
Coordinated lift involving multiple rescuers used when a lift is appropriate and enough rescuers are available.
Four-Man Log Roll
Team movement technique used to reposition a casualty while maintaining alignment.
Extremity Carry
A carry using the casualty's extremities to assist movement.
RED - Immediate
Triage category requiring immediate life-saving intervention; represents highest treatment urgency.
YELLOW - Delayed
Triage category for serious conditions where treatment can tolerate a short delay.
GREEN - Minor
Triage category for minor injuries; commonly includes walking wounded who can safely wait relative to higher-priority patients.
BLACK Expectant
Triage category for deceased casualties or injuries not survivable under the circumstances of a mass-casualty incident.
Human Crutch
Assists a conscious casualty who can walk with support and bear enough weight to move with assistance.
Two-Handed Seat Carry
Technique where two rescuers support a conscious casualty for a short-distance move.
Primary Triage
The initial rapid assessment used to determine patient priority by focusing on immediately important findings.
Secondary Triage
A more detailed assessment performed after the initial triage that can identify additional injuries or changes affecting priority.
Disaster Triage
Triage used in mass-casualty incidents or disasters to achieve the greatest overall benefit from limited resources.
Head-tilt-chin-lift maneuver
Technique used for an unconscious casualty to open the airway when appropriate.
Look, Listen, and Feel
Assessment technique to check breathing by looking for chest movement, listening for sounds of breathing, and feeling for airflow.
Anatomical obstruction
Blockage caused by body structures or tissues that interfere with the airway.
