Physiology
The study of the function of body organs.
Histology
The study of the microscopic anatomy of cells and tissues.
Pathology
The study of diseases affecting the body.
Homeostasis
The condition of equilibrium in the body’s internal environment.
Epithelial Tissue
Covers exterior surfaces, lines cavities, and forms glands.
Connective Tissue
Binds cells and organs of the body together, providing support and protection.
Muscle Tissue
Tissue that contracts to produce movement.
Nervous Tissue
Allows propagation of electrochemical signals between different body regions.
Dorsal Body Cavity
Contains the cranial and vertebral cavities.
Ventral Body Cavity
Contains the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities.
Abdominal Regions
Nine regions that describe the anatomy of the abdominal area.
Proximal
Refers to a structure closer to the trunk or point of origin.
Distal
Refers to a structure further from the trunk or point of origin.
Medial
Closer to the midline of the body.
Lateral
Further from the midline of the body.
Superior
A structure closer to the head.
Inferior
A structure closer to the feet.
Sagittal Plane
Divides the body into right and left sides.
Coronal Plane
Divides the body into anterior and posterior sections.
Transverse Plane
Divides the body into upper and lower halves.
Metabolism
The sum of anabolic and catabolic reactions within the body.
Anabolism
The process of combining molecules to form complex substances.
Catabolism
The process of breaking down large molecules for energy.
Feedback Systems
Cycles of events that monitor and adjust physiological values.
