Health (WHO definition)
A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (WHO, 2020).
Health (Canadian Perspective)
A resource or asset for everyday life; a healthy individual or group must be able to identify and realize aspirations, satisfy needs, and change or cope with the environment (Public Health Services Canada, 2020).
Determinants of Health
A broad range of personal, social, economic, and environmental factors that determine individual and population level health, such as socio-economic status, education, and childhood experiences.
Social Determinants of Health
A specific group of social and/or economic factors within the broader determinants of health, including income, education, employment, discrimination, racism, and historical trauma.
Wellness (National Wellness Institute definition)
An active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence (National Wellness Institute, 2020).
Characteristics of Wellness
Conscious, self-directed, ever-evolving, multidimensional, holistic, positive, and (re)affirming.
Dimensions of Wellness
Often referred to as the 8 dimensions, including financial, occupational, and intellectual (often associated with mental wellness).
Health Inequality (WHO, 2020)
Differences in health status or in the distribution of health resources between different population groups, arising from the social conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age.
Health Inequity
Refers to the health inequalities which are unfair, unjust, and modifiable (Government of Canada, 2020).
Health Equity
The absence of unfair systems and policies; it seeks to reduce inequalities through increasing access to opportunities that improve and/or maintain optimal health and wellness.
Blue Zones
Specific regions explored by Dan Buettner where people live to be 100+ years old, specifically Sardinia, Okinawa, and Loma Linda, California.
