Overtaking on the Left

Permitted when the driver in front is turning right, in slow moving traffic where the outside lane is slower, at a traffic light filter when turning left or going straight, or when the other driver is turning right.

Right of Way at Uncontrolled Junctions

On roads of equal importance, you must give right of way to traffic on the right.

Stop Sign without White Line

Stop at or near the pole of the stop sign itself, but before the car enters the other road.

Right Turn Position (One-Way Street)

The extreme right hand lane.

Warning Signs

Black and yellow and diamond shaped, giving advance warning of a hazard to follow.

Regulatory Signs

Red, white and black; they are all round except three.

Turning on a Major Road

Find the nearest left hand side road, reverse into it, and drive out again when it is safe to do so.

Zebra Crossing Identification

Identified by yellow flashing beacons and black and white road markings.

Pedestrian Crossing Island

Indicates that the crossing is divided into two halves and each half is treated as a separate road.

Horn Use Restrictions

Must not be used between the hours of 11.30 p.m. and 7.00 a.m., except in an emergency.

Dimming Headlights

When meeting oncoming traffic, following behind a car, in well lit areas, in falling snow or dense fog, or immediately before and after lighting up times.

Dazzled by On-coming Lights

Slow down and stop if necessary.

Clearway

Stopping and parking prohibited during time shown.

Broken Yellow Roadside Line

Indicates a lay-by or a hard shoulder, usually found on a dual carriageway.

Double Yellow Lines

No parking at any time.

Single Yellow Line

No parking during business hours.

Legal Parking Distance from Kerb

As close as possible, not more than $45\,cm$.

Minimum Tyre Tread Depth

$1.6\,mm$ over main tread; motorcycle and vintage vehicles require $1\,mm$.

Maximum Motorway Speed for Cars

$$120\,k.m.h.$$

No Parking Areas

Near a bend, brow of a hill, hump back bridge, continuous white line, at an entrance, bus stop, opposite another vehicle on narrow road, or on a taxi rank.

No Overtaking Areas

At a bend, junction, brow of a hill, hump back bridge, continuous white line, or where the view of oncoming traffic is restricted.

Safe Following Distance

A minimum separation distance of the Two Second Rule may be applied.

Red Triangle

Indicates an obstruction on the road ahead, such as an accident or a broken down vehicle.

Traffic Light Sequence

Green/Amber/Red, or Red/Green.

Junction Right of Way (Failed Lights)

Traffic on the right.

Pedestrian Crossing Intentions

Normally putting a foot on the crossing; exceptions include a woman pushing a pram toward the crossing or a blind man with a cane.

Green Traffic Light

Proceed with caution.

Amber Traffic Light

STOP provided you can do so safely without crossing the stop line and without causing an accident.

Authority Figures

A garda, a traffic warden, or a person in charge of animals.

No Entry One-Way Street Markings

A continuous white line across the mouth of the junction with a broken white line on the inside of it.

Crossing a Continuous White Line

To avoid an accident or an obstruction or when there is a broken white line on the inside of it.

Box Junction Rule

Do not enter unless exit is clear, except when turning right and the oncoming traffic allows; do not block traffic.

Pelican Crossing

A set of pedestrian lights where the red light is followed by a flashing amber, allowing motorists to proceed with caution if the way is clear.

Zigzag Lines

Found on the approach to a pelican or zebra crossing; you are not allowed to park or overtake.

Right Turn Right of Way

Give way to the oncoming traffic.

Continuous White Line

Indicates you should avoid overtaking and are not allowed to cross; if alongside a broken line, you obey the line nearest to you.
