What is vesicular transport?
Transport of materials across membranes using vesicles
What is endocytosis vs exocytosis
Endocytosis brings materials into the cell; exocytosis releases materials out of the cell
What are the three types of endocytosis
Phagocytosis, pinocytosis, and receptor-mediated endocytosis
Describe phagocytosis
“Cell eating” the membrane forms pseudopodia to engulf large particles (eg bacteria), forming a phagosome that fuses either lysosomes
Describe pinocytosis
“Cell drinking” - nonspecific uptake of extracellular fluid and solutes via membrane indentation forming endocytic vesicles
What is receptor mediated endocytosis
Specific uptake using receptors and Clathrin coated pits that concentrate ligands for entry
What is the role of clathrin in receptor mediated endocytosis
Cytoplasmic protein that coats vesicles, aiding in vesicle formation and receptor clustering
What are the key functions of exocytosis
Secretion of substances (eg hormones) waste release, and addition of membrane components (lipids, proteins)
