Umbilical
Associated with the navel or center of the abdomen.
Pubic

Sagittal plane
A plane that separates the body into right and left parts.
Median plane
A sagittal plane along the midline that divides the body into equal left and right halves.
Transverse plane
A horizontal plane that separates the body into superior and inferior parts.
Frontal plane
A vertical plane that separates the body into anterior and posterior parts; also known as the coronal plane.
Superficial (external)
Toward or at the body surface.
Deep (internal)
Away from the body surface; more internal.
Ipsilateral
On the same side.
Contralateral
On opposite sides.
Medial
Toward or at the midline of the body; on the inner side of.
Lateral
Away from the midline of the body; on the outer side of.
Proximal
Closer to the origin of the body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk.
Distal
Farther from the origin of a body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk.
Superior (cranial)
Toward the head end or upper part of a structure or the body; above.
Inferior (caudal)
Away from the head end or toward the lower part of a structure or the body; below.
Anterior (ventral)
Toward or at the front of the body; in front of.
Posterior (dorsal)
Toward or at the back of the body; behind.
Cranial cavity
The body cavity that contains the brain.
Vertebral cavity
The body cavity that contains the spinal cord.
Thoracic cavity
The body cavity that contains the heart and lungs.
Abdominal cavity
The body cavity that contains digestive viscera, kidneys, and the peritoneal cavity.
Pelvic cavity
The body cavity that contains the bladder, reproductive organs, rectum, and the peritoneal cavity.
Epigastric region
The abdominal region located superior to the umbilical region.
Hypogastric region
The abdominal region located inferior to the umbilical region.
Umbilical region
The centermost abdominal region surrounding the navel.
Hypochondriac region
The abdominal regions (right and left) located lateral to the epigastric region.
Lumbar region
The abdominal regions (right and left) located lateral to the umbilical region.
Iliac (inguinal) region
The abdominal regions (right and left) located lateral to the hypogastric region.
