Tissue
A group of similar cells combined to perform a common function.
Epithelial Tissue
Tissue that covers the body surface, protecting underlying tissues, providing sensory surfaces, and secreting materials.
Simple Epithelia
A single layer of cells that lines internal organs and major body cavities, allowing diffusion.
Stratified Epithelia
Several layers of cells thick, providing protection, as seen in the skin.
Glandular Epithelia
Found in glands, secretes hormones, sweat, milk, saliva, and digestive enzymes.
Connective Tissue
Tissue that structurally supports the body, defends against pathogens, stores, and distributes substances.
Fibrous Connective Tissue
Includes loose connective tissue, dense connective tissue, and adipose tissue.
Muscle Tissue
Provides for movement of the body, including skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle.
Nervous Tissue
Carries information rapidly and is composed of neurons and glial cells.
Organs
Body structures composed of several different tissues grouped together for a specific function.
Integumentary System
A group of organs including skin that works together to protect the body and regulate sensory input.
Epidermis
The top layer of skin that is 10-30 cells thick and constantly regenerates.
Dermis
Layer below the epidermis that supports it and is significantly thicker.
Subcutaneous Layer
Layer beneath the skin that consists of adipose tissue and loose connective tissue.
Adipose Tissue
Connective tissue that acts as a shock absorber and provides insulation.
