Public Speaking
An organized, face-to-face, intentional attempt to inform, entertain, or persuade a group of people (usually five or more) through words, physical delivery, and visual/audio aids.
Glossophobia
A severe fear of public speaking.
Physical Preparation
Strategies to lower anxiety before speaking, including eating protein rather than high sugar, sleeping well, wearing comfortable clothing, and using stretching techniques.
Contextual Preparation
Lowering anxiety by knowing the venue, circumstance, and audience, and arriving early.

People (Element of Communication)
The senders and receivers involved in communication who exchange roles.
Cultural Context
Defined by Floyd (2017) as "the system of learned and shared symols, language, values, and norms that distinguish one group of people from another".
Message
An element of communication that may be informal and spontaneous (conversation) or formal, intentional, and planned (speech).
Channel
The "means through which a message gets from sender to receiver", which can be face-to-face or mediated, and verbal or nonverbal.
Feedback
Verbal and nonverbal responses used to evaluate effectiveness and decide next steps in an interaction.
Psychological Noise
A type of interference in communication caused by internal stressors, anxieties, and past experiences.
Encoding
Putting thoughts and feelings into words or symbols.
Decoding
Putting words and symbols into personal meaning.
Linear (Transmissional) Model
A communication model associated with Weaver and compared to bowling.
Interactive Model
A communication model compared to ping-pong.
Transactional Model
A communication model compared to Charades.
