Proclamation of 1763
A line in the mountains stating no going west, passed to keep peace between Native Americans and colonists and keep colonists close to the coast.
Tyranny
The unjust use of government power.
Stamp Act
A law passed to pay for war debt, troops, and government officials by taxing paper.
Stamp Act Congress
A gathering where delegates met in NY and declared no representation in Parliament, establishing the principle of 'no rep = no taxation'.
Navigation Acts
Laws that restricted colonial trade to England/Britain.
Salutary Neglect
An unofficial policy where England/Britain avoided strict enforcement of parliamentary laws meant to keep American colonies obedient.
Sugar Act
The first attempt to control the colonies through taxes.
Repeal
To take back or cancel.
Militia
A small emergency army of citizens who can fight in an emergency.
Quartering Act
A law passed by Parliament requiring colonists to provide housing along with food to soldiers.
