device used to help your lungs recover after lung surgery or a lung illness

How to use an incentive spirometer (1)

1. Have patient sit on edge of their bed if possible, or sit up as far as they can in bed

2. Instruct patient that the incentive spirometer should be in an upright position

3. Have patient place the mouthpiece in their mouth and make sure they seal their lips tightly around it

4. Instruct them to breathe in slowly and as deeply as possible
- tool works when you inhale, not exhale

5. Instruct patient to hold breath as long as possible (at least 5 seconds.) Then exhale slowly and allow the piston to fall to the bottom of the column

6. Instruct patient to rest for a few seconds and repeat steps 1-5 at least 10-15 times every hour
