Inversion Questions

Formal way to form questions by inverting subject and verb ➡ Example: Vous parlez anglais → Parlez-vous anglais ? (voo par-lay ahn-glay → par-lay voo ahn-glay) — Do you speak English? 📘 If the verb ends in a vowel and the subject pronoun begins with one (il, elle, on), insert -t- for smooth sound: Ii aime → Aime-t-il ? (eel em → em-teel) — Does he like?

Inversion of C’est (say)

That is / It is ➡ C’est → Est-ce… ? Example: C’est ton livre ? → Est-ce ton livre ? (say tohn leevr → es tohn leevr) — Is that your book?

Inversion of Il y a (eel ee ah)

There is / There are ➡ Il y a → Y a-t-il…? (eel ee ah → yah-teel) Example: Y a-t-il un problème ? (yah-teel uh pro-blem) — Is there a problem? 💡 The “-t-” is inserted fo pronunciation.

Pourquoi (poor-kwah)
