Regional Anatomy
The method of studying the body's structure by focusing attention on a specific main part, area, or region, examining the arrangement and relationships of various systemic structures within it.
Systemic Anatomy
The study of the body's organ systems that work together to carry out complex functions.
Clinical Anatomy
An approach to anatomical study that emphasizes aspects of bodily structure and function important in the practice of medicine, dentistry, and allied health sciences.
Anatomical Position
The standard reference position where a body is standing upright with head, gaze, and toes directed anteriorly, upper limbs adjacent to sides with palms facing anteriorly, and lower limbs together with feet parallel.
Median Plane
The vertical anteroposterior plane passing longitudinally through the midline of the head, neck, and trunk, dividing the body into right and left halves.
Sagittal Planes
Vertical planes passing through the body parallel to the median plane.
Frontal Planes
Vertical planes passing through the body at right angles to the median plane, dividing the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) parts.
Transverse Planes
Horizontal planes passing through the body at right angles to the median and frontal planes, dividing the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) parts.
Bilateral
Anatomical term describing paired structures that have right and left members, such as the kidneys.
Unilateral
Anatomical term describing structures occurring on one side of the body only, such as the spleen.
Ipsilateral
Occurring on the same side of the body relative to another structure.
Contralateral
Occurring on the opposite side of the body relative to another structure.
Radiology
The branch of medical science dealing with the use of radiant energy in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Conventional Radiography
An imaging study in which a highly penetrating beam of X-rays transilluminates the patient, displaying tissues of differing densities as relative light and dark areas on a monitor or film.
Computed Tomography
An imaging technique where an X-ray tube and detector rotate around the body axis to produce radiographic images that resemble transverse anatomical sections.
Ultrasonography
A technique that visualizes superficial or deep structures in the body by recording pulses of ultrasonic waves reflecting off the tissues.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging
An imaging technique using a strong magnetic field and radio wave pulses to produce detailed images of the body with superior soft tissue differentiation.
Nuclear Medicine Imaging
Techniques providing information about the distribution or concentration of trace radioactive substances introduced into the body to image specific organs.
Skeletal Striated Muscle
Voluntary somatic muscle that forms gross skeletal muscles, functioning to move or stabilize bones and other body structures.
Cardiac Striated Muscle
Involuntary visceral muscle forming most of the muscular wall of the heart (myocardium) and adjacent portions of great vessels.
Smooth Muscle
Involuntary unstriated visceral muscle located in the walls of blood vessels and hollow organs, moving substances through coordinated sequential contractions.
Fusiform Muscles
Spindle-shaped muscles with a round, thick belly (or bellies) and tapered ends, such as the biceps brachii.
Pennate Muscles
Feather-like muscles in the arrangement of their fascicles, which can be unipennate, bipennate, or multipennate.
Tonic Contraction
A slight continuous muscle contraction (muscle tone or tonus) that does not produce movement but gives firmness for joint stability and posture.
Isometric Contraction
A phasic muscle contraction in which muscle length remains constant and force increases above tonic levels without producing movement.
Isotonic Contraction
A phasic muscle contraction in which the muscle changes length in relationship to the production of movement.
Motor Unit
The functional unit of a muscle, consisting of a single motor neuron and all the specific muscle fibers it innervates and controls.
Prime Mover
The main muscle responsible for producing a specific movement of the body by contracting concentrically.
Fixator
A muscle that steadies the proximal parts of a limb through isometric contraction while movements occur in distal parts.
Synergist
A muscle that complements the action of a prime mover, directly providing additional force or indirectly acting as a fixator of an intervening joint.
Antagonist
A muscle that opposes the action of another muscle, contracting eccentrically to ensure smooth and controlled movement.
Neuron
The structural and functional unit of the nervous system, composed of a cell body with dendrites that carry impulses toward the body and an axon that carries impulses away.
Neuroglia
Nonneuronal, nonexcitable supporting cells in nervous tissue that insulate, nourish, and protect neurons, being about five times as abundant as neurons.
Nucleus (CNS)
A collection of nerve cell bodies inside the central nervous system.
Tract
A bundle of nerve fibers (axons) within the central nervous system connecting neighboring or distant nuclei of the cerebral cortex.
Gray Matter
Nervous tissue in the CNS containing nerve cell bodies, forming an H-shaped region in transverse sections of the spinal cord.
White Matter
Nervous tissue in the CNS formed by interconnecting fiber tract systems surrounding gray matter.
Endoneurium
Delicate connective tissue immediately surrounding the neurilemma cells and axons within a nerve fiber.
Perineurium
A layer of dense connective tissue that encloses a fascicle of nerve fibers, acting as an effective barrier against penetration by foreign substances.
Epineurium
A thick connective tissue sheath forming the outermost covering of a nerve, enclosing a bundle of fascicles.
Cranial Nerves
Twelve pairs of peripheral nerves exiting the cranial cavity through skull foramina, eleven of which arise from the brain.
Spinal Nerves
Thirty-one pairs of segmental peripheral nerves arising from specific spinal cord segments and exiting through intervertebral foramina.
Epidermis
The avascular, keratinized epithelium forming the tough outer protective layer of skin, overlying a regenerative deep basal layer.
Dermis
A dense layer of interlacing collagen and elastic fibers situated deep to the epidermis, providing skin tone, toughness, and strength.
Tension Lines
Cleavage lines (Langer lines) indicating the predominant direction of dermal collagen fibers, spiraling longitudinally in limbs and running transversely in the neck and trunk.
Subcutaneous Tissue
A layer composed mostly of loose connective tissue and stored fat located between dermis and deep fascia, containing sweat glands, cutaneous nerves, and superficial blood vessels.
Skin Ligaments
Small fibrous bands (retinacula cutis) extending through subcutaneous tissue that anchor the deep surface of the dermis to underlying deep fascia.
Superficial Burn
A thermal or radiation injury limited strictly to the epidermis, presenting with inflammation, redness, and potential peeling.
Partial-Thickness Burn
A skin injury damaging the epidermis and superficial or deep dermis, typically resulting in blistering or skin loss.
Full-Thickness Burn
A burn damaging the entire thickness of the skin and often extending into the underlying subcutaneous tissue.
Deep Fascia
A dense, organized layer of connective tissue devoid of fat that wraps deep body structures parallel to skin and subcutaneous tissue.
Bursae
Closed, collapsed sacs of serous membrane containing a thin film of lubricating fluid, situated in areas subject to friction as potential spaces.
