Navigation
A method of finding your way and determining your position and course of travel.
Representative Fraction (RF)
A scale on a map which shows the ratio between a distance on the map and the corresponding distance on the ground (e.g., 1:25000).
Contour Lines
Lines on a topographical map that represent relief and show valleys, ridges, and high points.
Six-Figure Grid Reference
A precise location on a map, found by reading easting and northing values.
Grid Bearing
An angle measured clockwise from grid north to a line on a map.
Magnetic North (MN)
The direction a compass needle points, influenced by Earth's magnetic field.
Grid North (GN)
The direction of north according to the grid lines on a map.
True North (TN)
The geographical north pole.
Back Bearing
The opposite direction of a bearing; calculated by adding or subtracting 180 degrees.
Real Risk
A measurable and objective probability of an event occurring causing harm.
Perceived Risk
Subjective assessment of the likelihood and severity of a potential risk.
Risk Identification
Specifies what can go wrong by considering each activity.
Control Measures
Planned actions that reduce the likelihood of a hazard progressing to a risk.
Trait Theory
Leadership theory that assumes leaders are born with certain qualities.
Behavioral Theory
Leadership theory that focuses on the behavior of the leader, suggesting that leadership is learnable.
Situational Theory
Leadership theory where leadership styles vary depending on the situation.
Transactional Theory
Leadership theory based on a give-and-take relationship between leader and follower, motivated by reward and punishment.
Transformational Theory
Leadership theory emphasizing the leader's personality and ability to inspire others through vision and passion.
Briefing
A session to inform participants of what to expect during a coming activity or event.
Full Value Contract
A framework for group members to commit to working together, adhering to safety guidelines, and providing feedback.
SMART Principle
A framework for goal setting, ensuring goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
Authority
The leader's ultimate responsibility for the group, especially regarding preparation and safety, which is non-negotiable.
Framing the Experience
Setting the stage for an activity, clarifying the experience, and drawing a common picture for all participants.
