Solutions: What is a mole?
SI base unit for amount of a substance
1 mole =
6.02 × 10²³ particles (avagadro’s number)
Two ways to measure a mole
Count one by one
Weight them - if you know the average weight of a particle you can divide the total mass by the known mass
Mass of a proton
1.67 × 10^-24 gram
Mass of a neutron
1.67 × 10^-24 gram
Mass of electron
1/1832 of proton mass
How many atoms of hydrogen does it take to weight one gram?

What is a solution?
Mixtures formed by dissolving one substance in another
Solute
dissolved substance (eg salt)
Solvent
substance in which the solute is dissolved (eg water)
Molar
moles of solute per liter
mole/liter
Weight of 1 mole
molecular weight in grams
