Define Penumbra
Blurring or fuzziness seen at the edges of structures in an X-ray image.
How does the size of the X-ray source affect penumbra?
A smaller point source results in less penumbra, leading to sharper images.
How can we reduce the Penumbra effect?
Smaller point source and patient closer to the image receptor
How does a small focus affect Penumbra?
Small penumbra
How does a large focus affect Penumnbra?
Large penumbra
What is the formula for magnification in radiography?
Magnification = SID / SOD (SID - OID)
What does SID stand for?
Source Image Distance
What does OID stand for?
Object Image Distance
What does SOD stand for?
Source Object Distance
Why is it important for the patient to be close to the image receptor (IR)?
To minimize OID, reducing magnification and unsharpness due to the penumbra effect.
Describe the Inverse Square Law in relation to X-ray intensity.
The intensity of the X-ray beam decreases as the distance from the point source increases.
What is distortion in radiography?
Misrepresentation of the shape (length and width) of an object in the radiographic image.
Name two types of geometric distortion in radiography.
Elongation and foreshortening.
How does patient positioning affect geometric distortion?
If the patient is not parallel to the detector plane, it can result in misdiagnosis due to geometric distortion.
