RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks)
combines multiple hard drives into a single system to boost speed, provide backups (redundancy), or both.
Striping
Splitting data across drives to boost speed.
Mirroring
Duplicating data on two drives for safety.
Parity
Using smart math to rebuild data if a drive dies.
RAID 0 (Striping)
Pure speed. No safety—if one drive fails, you lose everything.
RAID 1 (Mirroring)
Pure safety. Clones your data onto a second drive.
RAID 5 (Striping + Single Parity)
Good speed + safety. Can survive 1 dead drive.
RAID 5 (Striping + Single Parity)
Good speed + safety. Can survive 1 dead drive.
RAID 6 (Striping + Dual Parity)
Maximum safety. Can survive 2 dead drives.
RAID 10 (Striping + Mirroring)
High speed AND high safety (requires at least 4 drives).
