User Mode
Identified by 'Router>' prompt; the first mode in router configuration.
Enable
The command used in user mode to move to privilege mode.
Privilege Mode
Identified by 'Router#' prompt; allows executing 'show' commands.
Config T
The command used in privilege mode to enter configuration mode: config t.
Configuration Terminal
Used to configure specific interfaces, such as fast Ethernet or serial ports.
IP Address
Command used to assign an IP address and subnet mask to an interface.
No Shut
Command used to activate an interface that is in a shutdown state.
Default Gateway
The IP address of the router's interface, used by computers on the network to send traffic outside the local network.
GUI Method
Tool inside the router to configure the router graphically.
CLI
A command-line interface used to configure and manage the router.
Initial Configuration Dialog Box
A question asked when a router starts, concerning initial configuration.
Question Mark
Help command to view all the possible commands that could be run in the current mode.
Shut Position
The default state of all router interfaces, which must be changed to 'no shut' to activate the interface.
Serial Ports
A modular router requires these to connect to a WAN link.
Router
Devices that connect different networks.
