  • These policies were reinforced by the Marshall Plan (economic aid to rebuild the West and reduce appeal of communism)

  • Suffered a major crisis, the Berlin Blockade (1948-1949) where the Soviets did not let Western aid enter by foot. They delivered famously by air.

  • 1949 foundation of NATO

  • Korean War and division of the Korean peninsula along the 38th parallel.
