What is callose
A polysaccharide, B-1,3 links and B-1,6 between glucose monomers
Manufactured at cell wall within minutes of pathogen
Degraded by glucanases
How does callose work
Deposited between cell walls and membranes
Acts as a barrier against pathogens
Blocks plasmodesmata to seal infected cells
What is tylose
Balloon outgrowth of parenchyma cells in xylem
Fill lumen of xylem preventing spread of pathogen
Has terpenes which are toxic to pathogens
What chemical defences are there
Defensins- cysteine rich proteins that disrupt microbial plasma membranes
Phenols- compounds like tannin which inhibit enzymes used by pathogens
Alkaloids- nitrogen compounds which inhibit metabolic processes in fungi and insects
Terpenoids- oils and resin which are antifungal or antibacterial
Hydrolytic enzymes- enzymes such as chitinases which break down fungal cell walls
