What is callose

  • A polysaccharide, B-1,3 links and B-1,6 between glucose monomers

  • Manufactured at cell wall within minutes of pathogen

  • Degraded by glucanases

2
New cards

How does callose work

  • Deposited between cell walls and membranes

  • Acts as a barrier against pathogens

  • Blocks plasmodesmata to seal infected cells

3
New cards

What is tylose

  • Balloon outgrowth of parenchyma cells in xylem

  • Fill lumen of xylem preventing spread of pathogen

  • Has terpenes which are toxic to pathogens

4
New cards

What chemical defences are there

  • Defensins- cysteine rich proteins that disrupt microbial plasma membranes

  • Phenols- compounds like tannin which inhibit enzymes used by pathogens

  • Alkaloids- nitrogen compounds which inhibit metabolic processes in fungi and insects

  • Terpenoids- oils and resin which are antifungal or antibacterial

  • Hydrolytic enzymes- enzymes such as chitinases which break down fungal cell walls
