Matter

Anything that has mass and takes up space.

States of Matter

The three forms that matter can exist in: solid, liquid, and gas.

Pure Substance

A classification of matter that includes elements and compounds.

Element

A pure substance made of the same types of atoms.

Compound

A pure substance made of the same molecule with a fixed composition.

Mixture

A classification of matter that can be heterogeneous or homogeneous.

Heterogeneous Mixture

A mixture where you can see the different parts.

Homogeneous Mixture (solution)

A mixture that looks like one thing.

Physical properties

Properties that do not change the substance, such as a change of state, and can be undone.

Chemical properties

Properties that change what the substance is, often signaled by the production of gas, light, heat, color, or a smell change.
