Motivation
The process that initiates, directs, and sustains goal-oriented behaviors.
Intrinsic Motivation
The desire to perform an activity because of the value or pleasure associated with that activity, rather than for an apparent external goal.
Extrinsic Motivation
The desire to perform an activity to achieve an external goal that activity is directed toward.
Drive Reduction
A psychological state that motivates behaviors aimed at satisfying a need.
Pleasure Principle
The motivation to seek pleasure and avoid pain.
Need Hierarchy (Maslow)
An arrangement of needs where basic survival needs must be met before higher-level needs can be satisfied.
Arousal
Physiological activation that can impact motivation and performance.
Optimal Arousal
The level of arousal that is most conducive to optimal performance.
Yerkes-Dodson Law
The principle that performance increases with arousal up to an optimal point, beyond which performance decreases.
Homeostasis
The tendency for bodily functions to remain in equilibrium.
Sensation Seeking
The tendency to seek out new and exciting experiences.
Grit
The perseverance and passion for long-term goals.
