Mills Creek Pond
A water body that is brackish and flows from Victor Scott area through various locations to the sea.
Brackish Water
Water that is a mix of fresh and saltwater, typically found at the end of a pond where it meets the sea.
Mangroves
Coastal plants that thrive in salty water, providing habitat for small animals and capable of withstanding harsh conditions.
Drainage Basin (DB)
Also known as a catchment area; it is an open system where water inputs and outputs can fluctuate.
Inputs of a DB
Forces like energy from the sun, rain from neighboring basins, and water from tributaries contribute to a drainage basin.
Outputs of a DB
Includes the river's discharge, evaporation, rain falling in other basins, and water leaving in tributaries.
Channel Network
A system of surface and underground channels that collects or transports rain falling on the drainage basin.
Permeable Rock
Rock types that allow water to seep through, leading to less surface runoff.
Impermeable Rock
Rock types that do not allow water to seep through, resulting in increased surface runoff.
Vegetation's role in DB
Vegetation can slow down runoff, allowing more water to seep into the ground, increasing underground water.
Estuary
The area where a river meets the sea, often characterized by brackish water and unique ecosystems.
Confluence
The point where two or more bodies of water meet.
Watershed
An area of land that drains water into a specific water body.
Tributary
A smaller river or stream that flows into a larger river.
Source
The original point where a river begins.
