Building Code Requirements and Specification for Masonry Structures
Allowable Stress Design (ASD)
A design method for masonry structures as per IBC §2106 and §2107.
Strength Design (SD)
A design method for masonry structures as per IBC §2106 and §2108.
Empirical Design
A design method for masonry structures as per IBC §2106 and §2109.
Hollow Brick Masonry Units
A type of masonry unit, specifically hollow clay brick masonry.
Concrete Masonry Units (CMU)
A type of masonry unit that can be produced with different shapes for various purposes.
Type M Mortar
A high strength mortar generally used in high strength masonry or where durability is a factor.
Type S Mortar
Mortar with higher bond strength than Type M but lower compressive strength. Commonly used in reinforced masonry.
Type N Mortar
Mortar with lower compressive strength than Type S, but higher workability and bond strength due to higher lime content.
Grout
Material used to fill reinforced cells or cavities in reinforced masonry, consolidated to fill voids and bond to masonry surfaces.
Bed Joint
The horizontal joint in masonry construction where mortar is placed.
Head Joint
The vertical joint in masonry construction where mortar is placed.
Running Bond
A pattern in masonry where units are placed with head joints offset.
Stack Bond
A pattern in masonry where units are placed with head joints aligned.
Concave Joint
A mortar joint tooled to produce a concave profile for good weather protection.
V Joint
A mortar joint tooled to emphasize joints and conceal small irregularities in laying, providing a good weather joint.
Modulus of Elasticity (Em)
Measure of a material's stiffness, relating stress to strain. For clay masonry, it's approximately 700 times the specified compressive strength (fm). For concrete masonry, it's approximately 900 times (fm)
Flexural Tensile Strength
The stress at which load induced cracking occurs when masonry is subjected to flexural loads.
Allowable Stress Design
A design method where calculated stresses from service loads should not exceed permissible service load stresses.
Modular Ratio, n
Ratio of the modulus of elasticity of steel to the modulus of elasticity of masonry (Es/Em).
Shear Stress
Stress resulting from forces acting parallel to a surface. Calculated by dividing the shear force by the net shear area (V/Anv).
Effective Span
For continuous beams, it's the distance between centers of supports. For beams not built integrally with supports, it's the clear span plus the depth of the beam.
Movement Joints
Joints that permit movement of the concrete masonry at pre-selected locationsin the structure, without affecting the building’s serviceability or aesthetic features
Seismic Forces
Lateral forces applied tot he structure due to design seismic event.
Effective Embedment Depth
The depth to which an anchor bolt is embedded in masonry, influencing its load-bearing capacity.
Control Joints
These are joints that permit movement of the concrete masonry at pre-selected locationsin the structure, without affecting the building’s serviceability or aesthetic features. It is a good practice to space control joints no more than 25 feet apart and that length of each panel created by the control joints does not exceed 1.5 times the wall height
ASTM E119
“Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials."
