Advocacy
the attempt to bring about social and/or organizational change
Benevolence
doing something good.
Chronic Disease
Conditions that last 1 year or more and require ongoing medical attention or limit activities of daily living or both; long-term and may be controlled but not necessarily curable; also called noninfectious or non-communicable because it is not spread.
Communicable Disease
a disease that can be transmitted from one host to another; also called infectious or transmittable disease.
Community health
health characteristics specific to a group of people
Dynamic
Ever changing; constant change, activity, or progress
Empower
assisting an individual in becoming stronger and more confident
Empowerment
the gain of control over life and/or components of one’s life
Epidemic
an unexpectedly large number of cases of an illness or specific health-related event/behavior
Ethics
relating to moral principles; study of morals or morality; right/wrong; good/evil
Fitness
the level of physical ability as a result of exercise and proper nutrition
Health
a dynamic state of complete physical, mental, spiritual, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
Health education
Teaching and counseling on healthy living; any planned learning experiences based on sound theories that provide individuals, groups, and communities the opportunity to acquire information and skills needed to make quality health decisions.
Health literacy
the wide range of skills and competencies that people develop over their lifetimes to seek out, comprehend, evaluate, and use health information and concepts to make informed choices, reduce health risks, and increase quality of life. Individuals can access, interpret, and understand basic health information and the skills to promote health.
Health promotion
the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health; any planned combination of educational, political, environmental, regulatory, or organizational mechanisms that support actions, practices and conditions of healthy living.
Holistic
pertaining to the person as a whole, unified being.
Illness
a condition that prevents your body or mind from working normally; refers to a negative state
Infirmity
physical weakness or ailment
Life expectancy
estimated period that a person may expect to live
Malevolence
doing something bad
Morbidity
Having an illness or condition; symptomatic or unhealthy
Comorbidity
more than one disease/condition is present in a person at the same time
Mortality
the quality or state of being mortal; death or certain to die
Multicausation
many causes
Needs-assessment
program planning component that analyzes the characteristics of an environment for which a program will be implemented (translation: analyzing a population so we know what is needed)
Pandemic
outbreak of a health illness or condition over a large geographical area, such as a continent.
Personal health
individualized health specific to that person
Physical education (PE)
courses in the curriculum that utilizes learning in the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains in a play or movement exploration setting
Public health
study and practice of addressing threats to the health of a community; health characteristics that extend to various communities.
Quarantine
Isolation and restriction of movement among people with the intent to prevent the spread of illness or disease.
Quackery
A practice that sells false hope; health or medical practices known to be fraudulent or ignorant.
Wellness
relates to the level of health of each component of one’s life; refers to a positive state.
