proximal epiphysis
rounded end of long bone, located closest to the center of the body or torso
Diaphysis
long central shaft of the long bone, connects the two rounded ends.
distal epiphysis
rounded end of long bone located farthest away from the center of the body
articular cartilage
smooth white tissue that covers the ends of bones where they meet to form a joint
periosteum
dense fibrous membrane that covers outer surface of most bones.
endosteum
thin layer of connective tissue that lines the inner surfaces of bones including the marrow cavity, spongy bone and internal canals.
yellow bone marrow
type of soft fatty tissue found in the central cavities of long bones that primarily stores energy and contains specialized stem cells.
medullary cavity
hollow central space inside the diaphysis (shaft) of the long bones
epiphyseal line
solid bony remnant of the epiphyseal plate (growth plate) forms when a long bone stops growing in length
spongy bone
lightweight porous inner tissue found inside most bones
