Young - Relative Deprivation and Crime
As a result of relative deprivation, individuals pursue their own success at the expense of others. This leads to a reduction in social cohesion and subsequently crime. It is not inequality alone which creates crime but the perception of injustice and inequality as well. This explains why there are rising crime rates in affluent societies with growing inequality.
Lea and Young- Square of Crime
They suggest that crime is a social relationship and not simply the offender’s act alone. Hence, they argue that crime must be looked at through the Square of Crime which examines:
Offender
Victim
State/Police
Public
Kinsey, Lea, and Young - Democratic Policing
Traditional policing alienates working-class and ethnic minority communities. The Left Realist perspective argues that police should be accountable and respond to local concerns. Communities must have a say in policing priorities.
Late Jock Young - Bulimic Society and Late Modernity
Argues that society is “Culturally Inclusive” but “Socially exclusive’.
This means that people are encouraged to consume and desire luxury goods but structural inequalities excludes many as they do not have access to certain opportunities. This creates frustration which is vomited out through the act of crime.
