What is science ?
How is science done?
It’s a way of knowing about the world.
There are at least two ways:
By making observations and keeping notes (e.g. Jane Goodall)
By implementing the SCIENTIFIC METHOD
2
New cards
The Scientific Method
Can be looked at as a process that curious people use for learning about the world

Has several steps:
Making observations and gathering background information.
This leads to questions (Why? What? When? How?)
And formulation of hypotheses (which are, basically, possible answers to questions).
Design an experiment to test your hypothesis.
Collect data - analyse it, graph it
Form conclusions

A Few Cautions
A GOOD HYPOTHESES must be testable
EXPERIMENTS must be repeatable
A CONTROLLED EXPERIMENT is one where everything is kept the same (as much as possible) and only one variable is changed or manipulated at a time.

The substance or material you choose is your INDEPENDENT VARIABLE.
The response of the animal is the DEPENDENT VARIABLE.
Choose an appropriate CONTROL.
4
New cards
Controlled Experiment
You need to compare the animals’ response to each variable with the response to a neutral solution (e.g. water) or neutral situation.

Other than the solutions or situation you select, all other variables are kept the same for all of your experiments.

What are some other variables that might affect the way a cricket responds?
Dampness
Temperature
Size of container
Vibrations
Time of day or time of year

You cannot control all these factors, but you need to attempt to keep them the same for all experiments.

A good hypothesis must be…
a) testable.
b) based on measurable data.
c) can not rely on mysticism to provide an explanation.
d) falsifiable.
e) All of the above
E IS RIGHT

New cards
What is the name of the variable that the experimenter records as a response to the manipulated variable?
a) Control variable
b) Rate variable
c) Dependent variable
d) Independent variable
e) Transformative variable
C IS RIGHT

What does the experimenter compare the experimental samples against?
a) Control group
b) Rate variable
c) Dependent variable
d) Independent variable
e) Experimental group
A is the answer
