Anatomy
The scientific discipline that investigates the body's structures.
Developmental Anatomy
The study of structural changes that occur between conception and adulthood.
Embryology
A subspecialty of developmental anatomy that studies changes from conception to the end of the eighth week of development.
Cytology
The study of the structural features of cells.
Histology
The study of tissues, which are composed of cells and the materials surrounding them.
Gross Anatomy
The study of structures that can be examined without the aid of a microscope.
Systematic Anatomy
An approach to anatomy where the body is studied system by system.
Regional Anatomy
An approach to anatomy where the body is studied by area or region.
Surface Anatomy
The study of anatomical structures by looking at the exterior of the body.
Physiology
The scientific investigation of the processes or functions of living things to understand body responses and maintenance.
Chemical Level
The smallest level of structural organization in the body, involving interactions between atoms, chemical bonds, and molecules.
Cell Level
The level of organization consisting of basic structural and functional units containing compartments and organelles.
Tissue Level
The level of organization composed of a group of similar cells performing a functional role.
Organ Level
The level of organization composed of two or more tissue types that perform common functions.
Organ System Level
A group of organs that together perform a common set of functions viewed as a unit.
Organism Level
The highest level of structural organization, referring to living things considered as a whole.
Organization
A characteristic of life referring to specific interrelationships among parts of an organism and how those parts interact to perform functions.
Metabolism
A characteristic of life encompassing all chemical reactions taking place in the cells and internal environment of an organism.
Responsiveness
An organism's ability to sense changes in its external or internal environment and adjust to those changes.
Growth
A characteristic of life defined as an increase in the size or number of cells.
Development
The changes an organism undergoes through time, beginning with fertilization and ending at death.
Reproduction
A characteristic of life involving the formation of new cells or new organisms.
Differentiation
The processes that change a cell's structure and function from an immature, generalized state to a mature, specialized state.
Morphogenesis
The change in shape of tissues, organs, and the entire organism.
Homeostasis
The existence and maintenance of a relatively constant environment within the body around an ideal normal value or set point.
Variables
Measures of body properties that continuously change value in response to conditions, such as body temperature or heart rate.
Set Point
The normal or average value of a homeostatic variable.
Normal Range
The normal extent of increase or decrease of a variable around its set point.
Negative Feedback Mechanisms
The primary homeostatic mechanisms of the body where any deviation from the set point is made smaller or resisted.
Receptor
A component of a homeostatic mechanism that monitors the value of a variable and detects changes.
Control Center
The part of the feedback loop (such as the Hypothalamus in the brain) that establishes the set point and receives receptor signals.
Effector
A structure (such as sweat glands) that receives signals from the control center and adjusts the value of a variable.
Stimulus
A changed variable that initiates a homeostatic mechanism.
Positive Feedback Mechanisms
Mechanisms that occur when a response to the original stimulus results in an even greater deviation from the set point.
Anatomical Position
The posture of a person standing erect with face directed forward, upper limbs hanging at the sides, and palms facing upward.
Sagittal Plane
An imaginary flat surface that runs vertically through the body.
Median Plane
A sagittal plane that passes directly through the midline of the body, dividing it into equal left and right parts.
Transverse Plane
A plane running parallel to the ground that separates the body into superior and inferior parts.
Frontal Plane
A plane running vertically that separates the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) parts; also called coronal plane.
Longitudinal Section
A section created by making a cut through the length of an organ.
Transverse Section
A straight cut made at a right angle to the length of an organ; also called a cross section.
Oblique Section
A section created by making a cut across the length of an organ at an angle other than a right angle.
Mediastinum
The middle section of the thoracic cavity that divides it into left and right parts, containing the heart, thymus, trachea, esophagus, blood vessels, and nerves.
Parietal Membranes
Serous membranes found against the outer wall of a body cavity.
Visceral Membranes
Serous membranes that directly cover organs located within a body cavity.
Mesenteries
Specialized double layers of fused peritoneum that anchor organs to the body wall and provide pathways for nerves and blood vessels.
Retroperitoneal Organs
Organs covered by the parietal peritoneum located behind the peritoneal cavity, including the kidneys, adrenal glands, pancreas, parts of intestines, and urinary bladder.
Inferior / Superior
Directional terms meaning lower / higher.
Anterior / Posterior
Directional terms meaning front / back.
Ventral / Dorsal
Directional terms meaning belly / back.
Proximal / Distal
Directional terms meaning nearest / distant.
Lateral / Medial
Directional terms meaning away from the midline / towards the midline.
Superficial / Deep
Directional terms meaning toward or on the surface / internal.
