Contact area
The exact small spot on the mesial and distal surface of a tooth that touches an adjacent tooth surface, usually located at the widest portion of the crown.

Interproximal space
The triangular area between adjacent teeth, normally filled with interdental papilla, bounded by proximal surfaces, the alveolar crest, and the contact area.
Embrasure
Any curvature toward or away from the contact area on incisal, occlusal, lingual, or facial surfaces, which acts as a spillway to assist in channeling food away from teeth.

Curve of Spee
An anatomical curve viewed from the facial aspect extending from the incisal edge of the central incisors to the distobuccal cusp of the most posterior tooth.

Curve of Wilson
A transverse curve seen when viewing the dental arches from a frontal position, extending from the cusp tip of the left molar to the cusp tip of the right molar.

Crests of contour
The widest part or most convex area on facial, lingual, or proximal tooth surfaces, describing the bulbous form of a crown.
Occlusion
The contact relationship between maxillary and mandibular teeth in all mandibular positions and functional movements.
Centric occlusion
The standard tooth-contact position that serves as the baseline reference for normal occlusion.
Lobe
A primary developmental growth center that contributes to tooth formation, with anterior teeth forming from four lobes.
Mamelons
Three small, rounded elevations on the newly erupted incisal edge of an incisor that wear away through normal attrition.
Attrition
Normal wear occurring as a result of tooth-to-tooth contact.
Cervical line (CEJ)
The cementoenamel junction line where the enamel of the crown meets the cementum of the root.
Col area
A U-shaped depression in the interdental papilla located directly below the contact area.
Root apex
The terminal end or tip of the root, which leans distally in most anterior teeth.
Apical foramen
A tiny opening located at the root apex through which neural and vascular structures enter and exit the tooth.
Pulp canal
The internal canal located within the root that houses the dental pulp tissue.
Antagonist
A tooth situated in the opposing arch that makes contact with a specific tooth.
Succedaneous tooth
A permanent tooth that erupts to replace a predecessor primary tooth in the same dental arch position.
Fossa
A shallow, rounded indentation or depression on a tooth surface.
Ridge
A linear, elevated area or raised line on a tooth surface.
Cingulum
A smooth, rounded convexity on the cervical third of the lingual surface of an anterior tooth.
Root depression (furrow)
A shallow linear concavity located on the crown or root surface.
Bilaterally symmetric
A structural characteristic where the mesial and distal halves look nearly identical, making them difficult to differentiate visually.
Cusp slope
One of two inclined edges extending away from the cusp tip of a canine.
Labial ridge
A prominent linear elevation running vertically along the central portion of the facial surface of a canine.
Lingual ridge
A raised ridge on the lingual surface of a canine that divides the lingual fossa into mesiolingual and distolingual fossae.
Cornerstone tooth
A designation for the canine tooth due to its position at the corner of the dental arch and its function in supporting facial contours.
Maxillary central incisor
The widest anterior tooth mesiodistally, positioned adjacent to the upper midline (Universal numbers Right 8 and Left 9), erupting between 7 and 8 years of age.
Maxillary lateral incisor
The second tooth from the upper midline (Universal numbers Right 7 and Left 10), featuring rounded incisal angles and a crown length of 9 mm, erupting between 8 and 9 years of age.
Mandibular central incisor
The smallest tooth in the oral cavity (Universal numbers Right 25 and Left 24), which is bilaterally symmetric and contacts only a single antagonist in the opposing arch.
Mandibular lateral incisor
The second tooth from the lower midline (Universal numbers Right 26 and Left 23), slightly larger than the mandibular central incisor, with an incisal edge that twists towards the distal.
Maxillary canine
The longest tooth in the upper arch with a root length of 17 mm (Universal numbers Right 6 and Left 11), characterized by a bulky crown and a pronounced lingual cingulum.
Mandibular canine
The longest mandibular tooth with a crown length of 11 mm (Universal numbers Right 27 and Left 22), featuring a narrower and smoother lingual contour than its maxillary counterpart.
